Jonathan Birmingham Earl

Jonathan Birmingham Earl was born in 1816 in England and raised by his mother’s brother Earl.

Just prior to his marriage he had been working in France helping to build the first railroad in that country. While returning to England he stopped at an inn for the night, where Jane Wright was working. She was one of the girls waiting on his table. Jonathan told the landlady, “I’m going to marry one of those girls and tomorrow I will tie a scarf around her neck.” In the morning he tied the scarf around Jane’s neck.

Jane was also born in England and early in life she had a serious illness. She said she was impressed not to take the medicine prescribed. When no one was around she poured the medicine on her mother’s plants which immediately died. About the time she went to work at the inn a gypsy told her fortune. She was told that she would join a peculiar people and travel to a new land. Jonathan and Jane were married March, 1847. Soon after they were taught by missionaries and after reading the Book of Mormon were baptized in December 1847 when their son was one month old.

When Jane’s parents learned she had joined the Mormons, they disowned her. When their landlady found out, she put Jane and the baby out of the house not letting her wait until Jonathan came home from work.

One year later they had saved enough money to journey to America. Two months later their son died on the Mississippi River from the Cholera Plague. Rats were so thick one person had to stay awake at night to keep them from attacking the baby. Two years later they had enough money to buy an ox team and travel to Utah. They arrived in August 1852. Their first piece of land was bought for a pair of boots. Their first home was their covered wagon.

Jonathan and Jane’s third child was Edwin Wright Earl. Edwin’s daughter was Ann Earl. Ann’s first daughter was Vera Ann Rugg. Vera’s first daughter is Donna Joanne Garner or Joanne Harrington aka “G-Jo”.
